Under sullen concrete sky,
Here the oily ocean ebbs;
Rusted girders fall awry,
Mockery of spiders' webs.
In the iron waterfall
Steadily grew a machine
Hungrily devouring all:
Anthracite and gasoline.
I feel a change in the air,
A hope I'd never dared
Imagine could appear,
And I am a stranger to this world,
Not knowing why fate hurled me here.
And the earth looked out upon
What was born inside its womb
And it wept, for it had known
The icy blackness of the tomb,
And the canker gnawed on all
As the metal beasts grew more
Vermachine implacable,
Giant gasolinivore ....
I feel a change in the air,
A hope I'd never dared
Imagine could appear,
And I am a stranger to this world,
Not knowing why fate hurled me here,
And I see the danger in our lives,
But that is why I strive
To run from fear.
